The Smouldering Sons Of The West
'Something Good, Something Bad'
Topers Rant Records
*****

I have looked long and hard and can't find the press release for this album, and due to a current lack of internet (caused by having to send my computer away to have it repaired) I can't find anything out about the band which is a crying shame. The Smouldering Sons Of The West have produced an album in 'Something Good, Something Bad' that has plenty of the former and nothing of the latter. Ian Brown provides lead vocals and guitar (as well as providing all of the songs and producing the album); Jason Scopes is on guitar with Dominique Metz on Drums and Matt Round on bass and double bass.

This is an album that relies on songs and emotions, the reaction between instruments and the space between to let the music breathe. It is mostly acoustic and there are times that it can be described almost as 'country' such as on the hauntingly beautiful Freefall.

Going Concern manages to sound menacing and fragile, yet there is also a restrained passion. It is music that demands to be taken seriously; it is full of honesty, something that the modern created bands would not be able to understand. There is no reliance on strong amplification or shouted vocals, they live and die by their songs alone.

This is music that is just so good that it is crying out for recognition but although the band has apparently released two singles (singles edits are included here as bonus cuts), I doubt if they have been gaining much airplay. If you want to hear and enjoy seriously good music then this is an album that you should investigate... www.smoulderingsons.com
